‘Planning for Real’ training workshop

The Community Voices Programme hosted a 2-day Planning for Real training event on the 19th and 20th March 2007, inviting a variety of local organisations, community groups and volunteers.

‘Planning for Real’ is a process of community consultation, which, using a large scale 3D map, enables residents to identify a variety of local issues and concludes with the creation of an action plan for taking forward decisions made during this process.

This process of community consultation is an excellent way of engaging with a wide range of people, and provides a creative approach for residents to have their say on the area in which they live.

If you would like to find out more about ‘Planning for Real’, the Neighbourhood Initiatives Foundation provide further information on their website; www.nif.co.uk/planningforreal/

Since the training, the Dalkeith Health Centre is now using this technique to undertake an engagement exercise regarding the proposed new Health Centre. Planning for Real is being used to find out what people like and dislike about the current building and record suggestions for the new Centre. It is hoped these opinions will be taken forward into the planning stage, where community needs and wants will be considered alongside financial constraints and feasibility issues.

The Community Voices Programme is also supporting the Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust (MAEDT) to carry out a Planning for Real exercise that will look at identifying community needs and issues in the local area.
