Projects receiving Community Voices Programme funding include:
Mayfield and Easthouses Community Development Trust
The background of the Trust...
The community of Mayfield & Easthouses has been growing steadily over the past 50 years as new houses have been built and new people have relocated to the area. Whilst there was a lot going on in the area, there seemed to be a lack of a focal point for the community. There was no where to obtain information about what was happening in the community, or who to approach if residents would like to become involved in contributing to the community.
After researching how other communities have worked together for the benefit of their community as a whole, a group of individuals came together to investigate the usefulness of setting up a Development Trust, which would look to provide a focal point for issues, ideas, initiatives and communication.
A community meeting held in August 2006 was well attended and from this, a group of ten people formed a steering group to take forward the idea of a Development Trust.
The Trust managed to secure funding for this project from the Community Voices Programme/ Communities Scotland. This funded a part-time worker, enabling the Trust to begin managing small projects and generating new ideas.
Achievements so far...
Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust (MAEDT) is an organisation driven, managed and owned by the community of Mayfield and Easthouses. Their aim is to provide the community with the capacity to make positive changes for the benefit of their community and themselves, and to create community wealth through social enterprise, that has a lasting impact on the renewal and improvement of the area.
To date the Trust has carried out the following projects:
- A photographic survey, involving local groups to depict ‘the Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ of the area.
- A questionnaire survey asking how people felt about the community and the idea of a Development Trust, over 300 were completed and 97% were in favour of a Development Trust.
- An event to publicise the results of the two surveys carried out, which was attended by over 60 people throughout the morning.
- An event for the older people of the community, which displayed the photographs and questionnaire results, provided information on Development Trusts and engaged with over 60 people about issues regarding the community and what the possible solutions to these could be.
- Two youth events within the local youth facility, Y2K, one for juniors and one for seniors. These were well attended with a total of over 30 youths participating over the two evenings. The groups were asked to raise any concerns or issues they had regarding living in the community, good and bad.
- The Trust held a big community event on the 31st March 2007 called "Make it Happen". This event was used to inform the community about the Trust's new premises and about the woodlands that have been gifted to the community. A series of workshops were used to encourage ideas and comments on how these projects could be taken forward, as well discussing concerns over environmental issues.
This was attended by over 50 people, and the event was also used to launch the Trust’s new logo, which was designed by pupils at Newbattle Community High.

- Gorebridge Community Development Trust
Gorebridge Community Development Trust (GCDT) is a community owned and managed independent charity, aiming to help the local community in the sustainable regeneration of Gorebridge in three core areas; environment, social and economy.
Established in December 2004, Gorebridge Community Development Trust seeks to assist the local community in the sustainable regeneration of Gorebridge. In order to succeed, the Trust needed to secure public support and the support of various partner organisations and funders. With their continuing support, the Trust is determined to fulfil its objectives and become a self-sustaining, pro-active and representative organisation, which gives the people and businesses of Gorebridge every opportunity to assist and take the lead in the successful regeneration of the village.
The Trust is involved and supports a wide variety of projects, working with partners across all sectors. GCDT receives grants to carry out projects, however, we want to become a sustainable Trust, raising income ourselves from enterprise activities. These enterprises will also provide training and employment opportunities for local residents, and all remaining revenue will be re-invested into community services such as youth activities.
Simeon Ripley is the Trust’s Development Worker and is contactable at the Trust’s Main Street Office, Number 58, to discuss any ideas, great or small on how Gorebridge life can be improved for everyone. The Trust always has opportunities for local volunteers to become involved in its projects.
Likewise, the trust has a long list of members who receive regular communication with updates on projects and invites to community engagement events and the AGM.
