Woodburn Day Care Club provides a service for elderly people suffering from various disabilities. They range from strokes, arthritis, frailty, dementia and other physical and mental health problems. We are based at the Dalkeith Community centre in Woodburn and our membership catchment area is Woodburn/Dalkeith. We have charitable status and our employees are the board of Midlothian Voluntary Action.
Key aims of the Project:
To alleviate isolation and boredom
To encourage social interaction
To provide physical and mental stimulation
To build confidence
To instil a sense of belonging
To build friendships
Inclusive in our project are elderly members with learning difficulties who have lived most of their lives in institutions, but who now reside in local community care establishments. By developing social inclusion this has given us the opportunity to provide a worthwhile service to a wider range of elderly people within our community.

Being older and possibly housebound can be an isolating and depressing experience for people who have led an active life, but still have a lot to offer. Getting involved in our activities can help to alleviate these symptoms, encourage social engagement and interaction, and provide an environment where their well-being and sense of belonging are sustained and increased.
Volunteers
Currently we have a team of 18 volunteers and they help us to sustain a high quality of service because of their dedication. Their commitment has proved invaluable for the continued stability of the club. As with our members, we are endeavouring to break down the barriers of exclusion through volunteering. Our volunteers include people who are retired, people with learning difficulties and/or mental health problems. All are supportive of each other, with their needs as much a priority as the members.
Support Group for Carers
The carers group meet on a monthly basis. All too often their needs are neglected, and our aim is to provide a safe environment, where trust and confidentiality become the basis for open discussion about the enormous responsibilities felt by the carer. Community Psychiatric nurses from the Care of the Elderly team attend the meetings. They give sound and practical advice, as well as specified training, on stress, guilt and coping with dementia.
Times: Our club is open four days per week, Monday to Thursday, with a current membership of 44 people, plus a waiting list of potential members.
